Highway Speed Trap

Dear Editor,

I would like The Wave to focus on the Speed Trap on Flatbush Ave and Ave U (near the Belt Parkway entrance) going towards the Marine Parkway Bridge. The police are issuing tickets by the dozens on unsuspecting drivers who think they are driving within the posted 45 MPH signs. The signs are posted 45 MPH to the right and then there is a small sign on the left listing 30 MPH at the bottom of the hill.

When cars go over the hill the Police are there, with radar guns clocking cars going 40 to 45 MPH, and then they pull them over and issue speeding tickets. Most of the cars driving towards this speed trap are residents of Breezy Point and the Rockaways. I have been driving 50 years and never received a speeding ticket until last Thursday, along with dozens of other cars. The fine is $195 but added to that is an increase in one’s insurance for a speeding ticket. It is an unfair practice and should be addressed. Many Rockaway residents are aware of this abuse by Highway 2!
