The Rockaway Bike Parade

By Debbie Fleury

On Saturday, May 19, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) is hosting a bike parade to get people excited about “human-powered” transportation.

The Queens Council on the National Park Service is hosting the event, and participants are encouraged to wear fun, goofy outfits while they ride or walk along the parade route. Bikes, skates, skateboards and all “peoplepowered” vehicles are welcome.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. from Jacob Riis Bathhouse and it will continue along Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Prizes will be awarded at competitions that will take place on the boardwalk at Beach 97 Street at 1 p.m. Some of the award categories include: Best of Show, Most Green, Most Entertaining, and Most Unique and Artistic.

The event is free. All those who wish to be a part of the parade must register online in advance at: rwabikeparade2012. eventbrite.com. Children under 14 must have a parent or guardian with them who must sign a waiver at the day of the parade. All further inquiries and requests for volunteering opportunities may be sent to: info@rwalliance.org. This must-see event welcomes all “human-powered” transportation enthusiasts to join in the fun.
