Good Start To RLL Season; Festival On April 21

Rockaway Little League’s Opening Day festival isn’t until April 21 but there was plenty to celebrate on the ballfields last week.

In Major Boys action, the Wave Publishing Orioles split a pair of games during the opening week. The birds started off the new season slowly, spotting the A’s a comfortable lead. The Orioles never gave up and threatened throughout the game. They broke through with some runs late in the game but fell 12-4. Jon Allcock and TJ Powderly pitched for the Orioles. Kevin Mills and Christopher Gallagher starred at the plate.

Two days later, the O’s bounced back with a hardearned 5-3 victory against a feisty Casino Auto Body Dodger team. John Resker and Ryan Dougherty starred on the hill for the Wave team. Mills and Gallagher again swung the heavy lumber with help from Allcock.

John Schilling was sharp in the field while Dougherty’s amazing rolling-to-the-ground catch and throw to first kept the Dodgers at bay. Allcock shut the Dodgers down over the final two innings to seal the deal.

The El Caribe White Sox scored five times in the second on hits by Page McDade, Olivia Stack, Alex Cooke, Julianna Kelly and Victoria Meier en route to a 13-8 Minor Girls victory over the Dr. John’s Destroyers Reds.

Morgan Connolly and Corinne Connelly teamed up on the mound to secure the win. Noel Cooke, Kiera Price and Maeve Murnan provided the big bats. Brooke Leahy flashed leather in the field. Chloe Murphy and Kelly Erhard swung the bat well for the Reds.

The aces were wild in Pee Wee Seniors when the Servpro Dodgers played the Conte’s Carpets A’s on Wednesday evening. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Both teams had stellar performances from each of their three pitchers and lackluster performances from both of the lineups. Dylan LoConte of the A’s, came in relief in the fourth inning and pitched out of a bases loaded jam. Nico Allen and Timmy Mills both pitched two scoreless innings.

In Minor Boys, the Jameson’s Pub Twins outslugged the Denis S. O’Connor Cubs 15-10 in each team’s first game of the season.

Rockaway Little League’s annual Opening Day Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, April 21. As always, there will be a parade, rides, food, contests and prizes. Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Bob Turner, Senator Joe Addabbo and Councilman Eric Ulrich are among the politicians who have been invited. Wristbands go on sale this weekend or go to www.rockawaylittleleagueny.com.

Diamond Dust: This is the 59th season for Rockaway Little League. All games are played in Fort Tilden, Gateway NRA ... Major Girls softball throws their first pitch on April 14 and Tee Ball starts on April 28.
