Easter Sunday All-Hands Fire

A smoky all-hands fire brought hundreds of onlookers and 60 firefighters to Beach 123 Street at about 4:17 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 8. Fire officials say that the fire at 434 Beach 123 Street started in the kitchen of the two-story home and rapidly spread to the uninhabited second story. While the unidentified elderly homeowners smelled smoke and got out of the house unassisted, eyewitnesses say that at least two local off-duty firefighters entered the burning building to make sure than nobody was left in the structure. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Brooklyn. Photo by Howard Schwach. For more photos from the fire, see page 28.
