Kosmos Soccer Teams Shake Off Soggy Weekend

It was another wet and cold weekend for the Kosmos.

The Kosmos’ Nikh U10 girls woke Saturday morning to cold, rain and very wet fields at Soccer Park in Plainview. This didn’t stop the players from putting their best cleat forward. Nikh came out strong but found it difficult getting the ball into the net. Shannon Beissel had an outstanding performance as goalie.

No balls went by her during the first or second half. At the end of the first half the score was 0-0. During the second half, Sydney Urban crossed the ball to Grace Lanzetta who took a shot on goal. The ball bounced off a player and Niamh Gormley, who week after week is ready and in the right spot, struck the ball into the net. Nikh celebrated another win, 1-0.

In a tough and well played game, the East Meadow Power defeated the Kosmos’ Artemis GU10 team, 3- 2. Although falling behind early on a goal from in front of the Kosmos girls tied it on a breakaway goal by Catherine Lunny just one minute later. All first half the Kosmos were thwarted by a tough defense, and when the girls from East Meadow took advantage of two scoring opportunities the half-time score was 3-1.

The Kosmos girls never stopped trying and had a goal disallowed by an offside call midway through the second half. The Kosmos scored just a short time later when Shannon Neiswenter found the back of the net off a scramble in front to close the gap to 3-2. Unfortunately, the Artemis team just couldn’t get even, although, they had sustained pressure right up to the very end when the whistle blew as they were taking their last shot of the game.

On Sunday, with the sun out this time and much warmer, Nikh took a trip, again, out to Plainview for the second round of the State Cup -Arch Challenge against Plainview Old Bethpage (POB) Breakers. The girls played well against the Breakers. The first goal was from left wing, Grace Lanzetta, off her left foot. Shannon Beissel played a great goalie game allowing only one shot to go by her while one of the Breakers dived into her. Taylor Bryan, playing at fullback, took an amazing run up the field to the Breakers’ goal but the goalie stopped the shot.

The Breakers scored ending the second half in a tie, 1-1. Nikh was not at all interested in ending the game in a tie that would lead to overtime and possibly penalty kicks. During the second half, they came out very strong. Noelle Carey attempted a shot on goal that got deflected off the goalie and back at her. Jillian McCabe and Kate McNamara made strong attempts and pressured the goalie but the Breakers’ goalie was good, frustrating both girls. Niamh Gormley and Lauren Koenig supported the back and continually brought the ball up the wings to the forwards. Goals scored by Sydney Urban (2) and Sabrina McCarthy (1) allowing Nikh to continue to the third round of the State Cup – Arch Challenge.

The U9 boys lost a hard fought battle against the SABA Reds on Saturday, 2-1. SABA jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half but Jason Moore was aggressive in pushing down field and scoring a goal to tie up the game just before halftime. The second half was very exciting but SABA scored a second goal edging out the U9 boys, 2-1.

‘The Kosmos’ Rockaway Club is always looking for potential travel soccer players (boys and girls) from U7 – U14.
