Village Academy students At Yale Village Academy students At Yale On Saturday, March 24, Village Academy students visited Yale University. Students took college level courses in poetry, cosmology, and chemistry. Students were amazed and inspired by the Yale campus as they visited campus libraries and historical sites. After participating in engaging seminars and experiencing life on campus, VA students could be heard discussing future endeavors to attend universities. One student stated, “This trip was great. I always heard about Yale but now I know it is some place I can actually get into.” Village Academy principal, Doris Lee, states, “I try to ensure that each of my students experiences as many colleges as possible before they graduate. There is no limit to their success as long as they know what is available to them.” Parents who chaperoned raved about the opportunity for their child to take actual classes at Yale and are looking forward to the spring college tour. As a part of their college tour students will travel to Virginia to visit the University of Virginia, the University of Richmond and Virginia Tech.

While some students traveled to Yale other students participated in a Martial Arts tournament at Village Academy. The C.A.R.E. Martial Arts program sponsored by Shihan Jackie works with students to teach self-discipline and responsibility. Schools from all over the NYC area participated in the tournament with martial artists ranging from age 4 to 21 competing. Village Academy students have been taking martial arts since the fall and report their excitement about and appreciation for martial arts. One student stated, “A lot of schools don’t give you opportunities to do martial arts and other activities like that. Martial Arts help me to do better in school.” Village Academy students Lamar Hawkins and Reginald Harris took home first place and second place trophies, respectively. A five-student team comprised of Reginald Harris, Joni Burney, Jayshawn Corley, Renaldo Rivera and Hubert Spencer won first place in the floor grappling team competition.
