Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Season 23 Coming Soon

By Joe McGivney

The last St. Patty’s Day Parade has finished and that means beach volleyball can’t be far off. Hang up your kilts and break out the Speedos because it’s nearly time to bump, set and spike on the sands of Riis Park (By the way, does anyone have a picture of TBG or Cement Shoes in either a kilt or a Speedo?).

This season the RBVL team registration process was changed a little bit and captains were required to respond via e-mail by March 15 whether they were returning or not. This duty was successfully carried out by almost every team.

If you are one of the few teams that have not done so please confirm that your team intends to return to the RBVL this summer by replying ASAP via e-mail to Denise at DeniseBrunner@MSN.com.

This is your initial registration. Please identify yourself and your team by name so we know who is replying. Do not skip this step! Send a one sentence email ASAP or you are not registered for 2012. All captains should have already received all of this information via e-mail.

Due to higher expenses (park fees, insurance, equipment, etc.) the entry fee for this summer will be $700 per team. And to streamline the collection of money and rosters, the RBVL will hold only one meeting this spring. All team captains are required to attend the first and only pre-season meeting of the year at the Blackwater on Wednesday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m. Captains must bring a full roster (unsigned is OK, signed is even better) and their full payment for the 2012 season is $700. If a captain is unable to attend he must send a representative in his place with both the money and the roster. Roster and uniform order forms are available on the website at www.rbvl.com.

The fee for anyone who registers after the April 18 meeting is $750. At midnight on Sunday April 22, registration is closed and no more teams will be accepted. That means late teams have April 19, 20, 21 and 22 to get in before it is too late.

All players are welcome to come out of hibernation and join the festivities as well. The general feedback on the 2011 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone’s input and assistance.

Feel free to attend the meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement. Captains can do a big favor by e-mailing your vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from your team. If the information is the same as last year, don’t do a thing. However, if you have a new e-mail address or you’ve elected a new captain, send the info to jmcgivney2@ nyc.rr.com as soon as possible; you don’t have to wait for the meeting.

We’re looking to improve the speed and accuracy of our announcements and contacts. Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not.

Last year, 9 divisions of different playing (and imbibing) levels were fielded with a record-setting 70 teams. There are no expansion plans this year and that total will remain the same for 2012.

You can mark a few additional special dates on your calendars as well. Wednesday, May 23 will be the first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, May 30 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday.

On August 11, the league championships will be played, keep your schedules clear. Every year it’s a blast! Now for today’s feature math trivia question: Casino Towing joined the league in the RBVL’s second season. At that time, they were old. 22 years have since passed. How old are they now? Answer: Really, really old! It will only be a couple of months before the ultimate “Survivor” battle begins on the tropical island shores of Riis Park. Opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand.

If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917-613- 0908. Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. See you at the Blackwater on April 18.
