Little League Says ‘Play Ball!’
More than 700 children and Challenger Division athletes will compete on 57 teams in 2012. Most divisions begin this weekend. Major Girls softball throws their first pitch on April 14 and Tee Ball starts on April 28.
To prepare for the season, the League held its first annual Coaches Day this weekend. Coaches gathered at the Rockaway Theatre Company to hear presentations on first aid, safety, rule changes, sportsmanship, practice strategies and the League’s new web services. Over 100 parents are coaches in our all-volunteer organization. Coaches Day was organized by Stu Mackoff and Justin Berman. Special thanks to Debbie Scaccia, Rose Resker and Claire Reyes for making the first aid presentation; to Jan Rosenblum for the proactive coaching clinic; and to RTC for the use of their facility.
This season, RLL stepped into the 21st century by implementing a fully online system for registration and parent information. Through our website, parents and players can access rosters, schedules, scores and standings. Coaches can send emails to their teams.
Rockaway Little League’s annual “Opening Day” Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, April 21. As always, there will be a parade, rides, food, contests and prizes. Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Bob Turner are among the politicians who have been invited. Wristbands go on sale this weekend.
In most divisions, each team plays 12 games. All games are played at the Rockaway Little League facility that is part of Gateway NRA in Fort Tilden. RLL also collaborates with Gateway to offer a kayak program and other nature-oriented educational programs for youths from Rockaway and the mainland.
