Kosmos Return To Soccer Pitch With Early Spring Wins

This past weekend was the start of the spring soccer season for the Rockaway Kosmos.

The girls U7 Tyche team had its opening game on Saturday against King Park SC White team. Excellent defense by Jenna Colleran and Fallon Ris, along with excellent goaltending by Lilly O’Neill and Mary Comer only allowed Kings Park to score one goal. Tyche’s defense could not stop the strong offensive duo of Ciaomhe Gormley and Emily Harkins, who each scored 3 goals. A last minute goal by Lilly O’Neill made the final score of the game 7-1. It was a great way to start the season. Go Tyche!

Saturday morning began a good day at the Aviator Sports and Recreational facility with both Kosmos’ girls U10 teams, Nikh and Artemis, meeting up with their opponents, Syosset Madrid and Garden City.

The Kosmos U10 Artemis girls had their home opener and started their spring season with a 2-2 tie against Garden City.

The winds were strong but it could not slow down the Kosmos girls from scoring first. A pass by Maggie Murphy split the defenders and found the foot of Catherine “Cat” Lunny. She was able to gain control of the pass, take it in stride and blast it to the corner of the net making it 1-0. Garden City tied up the score in the first half, keeping pressure on the Kosmos midfielders and defenders.

The second half started strong for both teams, but Garden City pushed ahead first, breaking the tie and making it 2-1. The Artemis girls kept pushing and were awarded a penalty kick with only one minute left in the game. Molly Murtagh stepped to the ball and her sheer power was able to force the ball through the goalie’s legs, tying the score at 2-2.

A solid game was displayed by Caitlin Mullin, Devin Ris, Mollie Abernethy, Beth Dunn, and Daniella Di Carlo. There was also great goaltending by Molly Murtagh and Caitlin Mullin.

Nikh’s opponents were the Division 2 winners of the fall season. Syosset Madrid was not expecting the aggressive soccer playing by Nikh. Shannon Beissel saved every attempt on Nikh’s goal.

The backs Lauren Koenig, Taylor Bryan, Grace Lanzetta and Niamh Gormley easily presented the forwards with the ball throughout the game. Midfielder Sydney Urban, along with forwards Noelle Carey, Kaysea Jenkusky and Sabrina McCarthy set up many passing plays leaving Syosset chasing between players. Lanzetta scored the winning goal off her left foot.

In their first season as a team, the Kosmos’ Ares Boy’s U9 team got their season off to a great start with a 2-2 tie against the Albertson SC from Old Westbury. Ares, playing at Aviator, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Danny Grillo and Patrick Powderly.

The Kosmos fought hard against the very strong winds in the second half but Albertson crept back into the game scoring two goals to tie it up. It was a great effort by the entire team and the Ares boys are looking forward to a fun and successful first season together.

On Sunday, the U8 girls from Nemesis traveled to Randall’s Island to take on the tough Manhattan Soccer club. Nemesis came out strong and overtook the Manhattan Soccer club to win 5–0. Great Job Nemesis!!

Also on Sunday, the U10 girls of Eris went to Uniondale to take on the Uniondale NYSLA Gacelas Magicas. The girls beat the NYSLA 3–0. Goalie Emma Baldwin was very aggressive saving all attempts on goal.

Kristin Green, Catherine Savastano, Analiese O’Leary, Victoria Catalano and Sofia Edri never stood still, keeping the ball forward as much as they could with help from the fullbacks Nikki Cimino, Julia Necka-Huptysiowska and Maeve Murnan.
