PS/MS 114 Students Take On Ballroom Dancing
Several months ago PS/MS 114 started a ballroom dancing program for fifth-graders. This was part of the physical education curriculum that was overseen by physical education teachers Dainna Zwirn and Dennis Rawlings. The program, which was funded by the PTA, was facilitated by Ballroom Basix (www.ballroombasix.com). Their teaching artists, Mr. Chris and Ms. Alex, came to PS/MS 114 twice a week and instructed the fifth-graders in various ballroom dances.
On March 13 they put on a show in the auditorium. The show was hosted by Mr. Sid, director of Ballroom Basix. The performance showed how much the children had learned and how much they enjoyed the experience. The show was thoroughly enjoyed by all those in attendance. Besides learning to dance the children were required to know something of the background and history of the dances they performed. But beyond that they also learned to respect others.
Initially there was some trepidation and discomfort about boys and girls dancing together. They soon learned to overcome that and enjoy themselves and to treat each other as young ladies and young gentleman. This was a wonderful program that is available to any school and that not only provides a great learning experience but leaves the kids with a skill that they use the rest of their lives.
