By Miriam Rosenberg

On Thursday morning police arrested Allan Swafford, 17, who they believe is responsible for the March 30 destruction of the nearly completed playground under construction at Beach 29 Street. According to published reported the teen was arrested after police received a crime stoppers tip. He has been charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal mischief and burglary. Police sources said the youth was staying “in close proximity to the construction site.”

“Let this send a message to any criminal element in our midst: Far Rockaway is turning a new page, and this kind of senseless vandalism will no longer be tolerated,” said Councilman James Sanders Jr. He added “I thank our friends in the NYPD for moving so quickly to see to it that this misguided young man was apprehended before he could reap any more damage on the face of the Rockaways.”

While Swafford has been apprehended, Deputy Inspector Michael Liperti of the 101 Precinct told The Wave that the investigation into the vandalism, which caused $100,000 worth of damage, is still ongoing
