What Gets My Irish Up

Dear Editor,

My wife and I recently moved to the Arverne area. We’ve always heard about the Rockaway Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade. On the day of the parade we walked to Beach 116 Street and positioned ourselves there for viewing. The weather was agreeable, and the parade was fabulous. The bands, grand marshals, politicians and school groups were so well prepared.

After the parade, we went to the Belle Harbor Steak House for a delicious corned beef and cabbage lunch. After that, we strolled home.

What we encounted on our way home really dampened our day. We passed about six bars, there were fistfights at Beach 113 Street and police officers were making arrests.

And so we wondered: Are the bar owners given a pass on parade day to serve minors?

Well – my wife and I enjoyed the parade so much, it’s likely that we will march next year. But we sure hope that the bars do a better job.
