It seems this idea thing is catching on. Or since this is Rockaway let’s say ideas are coming in waves. After our inaugural column about a month ago, locals have stopped us on the street and sent us emails to offer ideas. Ideas about anything and everything.
As a reminder, we ask for ideas. No complaints, no gripes. That’s for The Bag of Mail. You know what they say, ideas are a dime a dozen.
Here are a nickel’s worth:
My idea is to convert those tee shirt guns that you see used in stadiums so lifeguards can use them to shoot out a flotation device to swimmers in distress. –Mike, Rockaway Beach
My idea is that Eminent Domain be used for the public good along the stretch of Rockaway Beach Boulevard from 116th Street to Beach 112th. All buildings facing the street on the north side, the beach side [sic], should be torn down.
The road should be widened enough to allow parking —-which is not possible now. As it is, that stretch will never thrive. New buildings with new shops that offered parking would transform the area. - Helen, Rockaway Park
There are several churches and organizations that offer Al-anon to the peninsula. This is a great support group for the spouses of alcoholics. However, I was upset to learn that there is NO ALATEEN anywhere near us. This type of support would be extremely beneficial for the children (teenagers) of alcoholics. The closest one is in Manhattan. Teenagers identify mostly with their peers and that is why a group like this could be so helpful in our community. – Peggy, Rockaway
Here’s an idea, move all the piping plovers to a specially designated beach where they will be protected from human beings. If a piping plover is found on any other beach, they need to be moved to the designated beaches for their protection so they are not negatively impacting the use of the beach by the people who pay for them. - Patrick, Breezy Point.
My idea is that Nazareth High which is closing its doors in Brooklyn be moved to the site of the old Stella Maris High School. Many Nazareth alumni live in Rockaway now and would support a school they had ties to. Peninsula Prep which is in the building now is closing. Why not put Nazareth High School there? - Richie, Brooklyn
Cross Bay Boulevard at the bird sanctuary is still very dangerous for bike riders heading north towards Howard Beach. The unprotected bike lane that is there now will be the reason people are killed this summer. Remove the dead trees that line the sidewalk and pave it so it can be used as a walk and bike path.
It’s a simple idea that would save lives. - Larry, Rockaway
