Helpful Golf Instruction Tips For All Levels
As I write this, looking out the window, the sun is shining and the weather is almost spring-like and that means we are not that far away from spring training our golf game.
This article is about “The Second Part of the Swing.“
The start of the downswing to the finish of the follow-through is the most crucial part.
The downswing is initiated by turning the hips to the left. The shoulders, arms and hands – in that order – then release their power. The speed developed in this action carries you all the way around to the finish of your followthrough. I am sure you have heard the word “plane.“
What is important to know is for your swing to remain on plane back and down to and through the ball. You get on the downswing plane when you turn your hips to the left to initiate the downswing.
Turn your hips back to the left. There must be enough lateral motion forward to transfer the weight to the left foot. The turning of the hips starts the downswing. This movement of the hips automatically lowers the arms and hands to a position just above hip level.
After you have initiated the downswing with the hips, you want to think of only one thing; Hitting through the ball, not at the ball.
Key thought is, the ball is stationary and the club in your hands, mainly the club head, will make contact with the ball and send it to the target you selected before you started your swing. So let the ball get in the way of a swinging club head that is going through the ball to the target. Try to get out of the “hit the ball” thoughts and swing the club head to the target and I am sure the ball will start its flight.
Conclusion: I only think of two things from the beginning of the down swing to the end of the follow-through. Starting the hips back and then hitting just as hard as I can with the upper part of my body, my arms and my hands, in that order!
