St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Announces Staff Of The Year

With input from patients, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital honored staff and teams of the year who made a difference and whose performance went beyond the call of duty. Winners received an engraved crystal prism during a ceremony at a town hall meeting attended by their peers and friends. To encourage patients to make nominations, nomination forms were available throughout the Hospital and on patient floors. St. John’s Episcopal Hospital is proud to announce the winners of 2012.

As a nurse in the Ambulatory Surgery department, Bacchus consistently shows clinical skills and compassionate warmth toward her patients. She is a valued member of her team and her patients love her; including those she sees only once, but especially the ones she sees regularly. As one patient recently wrote, “I had to come five consecutive Wednesdays for IV therapy. Every employee at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital is extremely warm and caring, but Ms. Bacchus’ skills and demeanor as a nurse in this department were above and beyond words. She is very professional, organized and proficient. Once she showed up on the unit, I always knew I was in extremely good and capable hands.”

MANAGER OF THE YEAR: Naasira Salahuddin, RN

Team of the Year, Pulmonary Care Center. Team of the Year, Pulmonary Care Center. Excellent managers are competent in their areas, can connect with people, and have the conceptual skill to envision the future and creatively solve problems. As Administrative Supervisor of the Nursing Department, Salahuddin is such a manager. She is a skilled clinician who always puts patients and families at the center of care. Her patience and compassion, along with her excellent communication skills, help her work collaboratively with physicians, peers and staff members.

She is always ready to listen, help a patient or family, support a member of the staff, and work as a team player to get the job done.

Dr. Peter is a highly qualified Associate Chairperson of Family Practice, a role she has filled for 10 years with enthusiasm and vigor.

She is an excellent role model for her residents and students, remaining current in her fields, having recertified in internal medicine, pulmonary care and critical care. As Raymond J. Pastore, MD, Chief Medical Officer, says, “Our patients and residents under her care and tutelage can be assured of receiving the best state-of-the-art care and training. Many have witnessed her willingness to be an avid team player. I know I can call on her whenever I am in a pinch and she is always there to help, willingly and with a smile.”

TEAM OF THE YEAR: Pulmonary Care Center

Also known as Tower 8, the staff of the Pulmonary Care Center receives numerous letters and compliments. The nurses, aides and assistants are cited for their kindness, courtesy and knowledge.

The physicians and interns are complimented for their caring touch. The night staff is praised as readily as the day staff. Nurse Manager Hermelina “Lin” Zabala, RN, always receives high praise, too. In fact, one patient recently wrote that the Pulmonary Care Center team single-handedly made her feel good about the whole Hospital. Another patient said, “Everyone showed great compassion. Many thanks for your wonderful care.”

St. John’s Staff of the Year are being honored by the Development Board at its upcoming concert featuring Mike DelGuidice and Big Shot: The Premiere Billy Joel Show that will be held on Thursday, March 29, at the Woodmere Club. Tickets are available.
