St. Francis Basketball Continues CYO Title Chase
The St. Francis De Sales girls Novice basketball team won the inaugural CYO classic, which pitted the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan Champs vs. the Nassau/Suffolk Champs at St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay on Saturday. The SFDS girls defeated St. Patrick’s of Huntington 19-14.
The girls led by two points at the half in a defensive struggle. Kelsey Flynn had 4 of her game high 9 points in the opening quarter.
In the opening minutes of the third it was again Flynn (4 points) and three points from Alex Dadario that stretched the St. Francis lead to 7.
Reilly Mangano, Rian Courtney, and Jillian Howard starred on the defensive end in the mammoth Long Island gym.
In the fourth quarter St. Patrick’s cut the deficit to three with a minute to go in the game, but Hannah Harkins put back basket gave SFDS their final margin of victory in an historic first CYO classic.
The Boys CYO playoffs continue this weekend. The St. Francis teams are in action on Saturday at various sites. Pee Wee M faces St. Margaret at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi. Pee Wee R goes to Gate of Heaven at 10:00 a.m. to play Our Lady of the Angelus. The Novice team is at St. Joan of Arc to play St. Patrick at 10:00 a.m. The Bantams follow shortly after at 12:15 p.m. against St. Rose.
The Peggy Boyle Tournament is progressing and there is a full slate of games this Saturday and Sunday, as well as 3 games each on Monday and Wednesday night. Saturday’s games include both SFDS Pee Wee teams as well as the Intermediates and Subnovice M. Subnovice L is scheduled for Sunday.
After Monday’s and Wednesday’s games, most divisions will be down to 3 remaining teams.
Games on March 18 and March 19 will then decide the participants for the championship games on March 24.
