‘Unnecessary’ Rescue Performed By NYPD

All photos by Marek Janikowski All photos by Marek Janikowski Only an hour after the last pipe and drum was heard on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, a kitesurfer riding parallel to the shores off Beach 87 Street on Saturday had to be rescued by an NYPD helicopter and divers. The rescue occurred in the afternoon after a resident along Shore Front Parkway called 911 when it appeared the rider might be drowning. According to the kitesurfer, however, at the point the call came in he was not in danger, but the force of the NYPD helicopter almost made him drown when the excessive winds tangled him in his kite strings.
