SFDS Girls Earns Diocesan Title
The SFDS Novice Girls captured the diocesan championship by edging OLQM 24-19. The girls came out firing on all cylinders opening with an 8-0 run to start the game. Ryan Carlton scored 6 of her 14 points in the opening minutes of the game. The SFDS girls led by 7 points at halftime, as Hannah Harkins and Kelsey Flynn had numerous steals.
Queen of Martys cut the lead to 3 early in the 4th, but Rian Courtney and Jillian Howard’s baskets upped the lead to 7 points. With 20 seconds left in the game, Ryan Carlton went down in a heap after a tie up, and in the only somber news of the game her season came to an abrupt end as she found out after the game that she has a fractured right arm. St. Francis would go on to close out the game and win a hard fought championship.
Alex Dadario, Olivia Murray (who grabbed an important offensive rebound and putback basket late in the third), Reilly Mangano, Fran Agoglia, Savannah Taylor, Liz Meringolo, and Taylor Scaccia round out the 2011-2012 championship team. The girls advanced to the diocesan championship by overpowering Resurrection from Brooklyn 27-9. Carlton led the team with a game high 10 points. Ryan averaged 11 points a game in the tournament. Hannah Harkins chipped in with 6 points and Kelsey Flynn had 4. The big three of Francesca Agoglia, Savannah Taylor, and Elizabeth Meringolo all added scoring off the bench. Jillian Howard, Rian Courtney, and Alex Dadario each made defensive contributions.
The coaches congratulated the team on having a great season and forward to a battle of champions next weekend in Oyster Bay, Long Island to oppose the Rockville champs on March 3.
The Rookie Girls won a thriller on Saturday in the semi-finals against Blessed Trinity but could not follow up in the championship as they fell to St. Adalbert 20-16. Also in Saturday’s semi-finals, the Bantams lost a 23-20 heartbreaker to Our Lady of Hope and the Pee Wee H lost a defensive struggle with Our Lady of the Snows.
All are in action in the Peggy Boyle Tournament that began this past weekend. Games this week are on Sunday March 4 beginning at 1 pm, and Monday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 7 at 6 pm.
On the boys side, Pee Wee R advanced with wins over St. Luke, 29-18, and St. Adalbert and will next play at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday March 10 at Gate of Heaven against Our Lady of the Angelus. Pee Wee M won twice against OLMM, 29-8, and Our Lady of the Snows, 29-13 to advance to the next round against St. Margaret on March 10 11:00 at Corpus Christi. The Novice boys will play St. Patrick at 1:00 on March 10 at St Joan of Arc after beating St. Joan on Sunday.
The Bantam Boys defeated St. Sebastian 50-27 in the first round of the CYO playoffs. Aidan Donahue led all scoring with 13 points. John Moran scored 12. Jag Giaradelli added 9 points, but his greatest contribution was on defense. Timmy Connolly dominated the boards. Matty Ostrander and Joe Allesandro were relentless defenders. They go to St. Joan at 12:15 p.m. on March 10 to face peninsula rival St. Rose. The Rookies lost a close one to St. Andrew after splitting with them in the Christmas Tournament. The Intermediates were beaten by a very formidable squad from St. Mary Magdalene. The boys teams are competing in tournaments at St. Thomas Apostle and St. Joseph.
