Bishops Blast Obamacare

Dear Editor,

I’m late with this. I just saw an official printed copy of the Catholic Bishops’ letter in the parish bulletin of a Catholic parish I visited on Ash Wednesday. I am a Catholic proud of my church’s presence next to my ancestors and other working people of the world. I feel the obligation to criticize the bishops’ bad faith.

OK, they didn’t call it “Obamacare” but the framing of the ideas of their letter conjured up the same idea. The letter was as partisan as a GOP screed! ”But,” you say, “Where? how?”

Look at the second paragraph that objects to “... the rule forcing (bold type in the original)…private health plans – nationwide, by the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen – to cover sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion.”

The rhetorical and semantic dirty pool of the mullahs is obvious. Why stress “forcing?” Why use the far right’s clichĂ© “by the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen?” Drugs that “may” cause abortion? I say that holy water “may” cause cancer? It is obvious in context that neither statement is an honest expression of opinion.

However, the most egregious example of the partisan intent of the letter (and the reason for this essay’s title) is the repeated use of the phrase “the president.” A more honest expression of disagreement for religious reasons would refer to the “regulation,” to “HHS,” to “the government,” etc. The bishops’ phrasing is an obvious ad hominem. Don’t these guys know Latin?

Why such a big stink over birth control, an issue that is NOT official Catholic doctrine, and is practiced by 99% of catholic women without one of them having been burnt at the stake in recent memory? It is only an issue that the bishops stir up to aid their GOP buddies.

Isn’t this reason enough to take away their tax exemption? Don’t they want to balance the budget?
