Heroic Duo Detains Burglar
A burglar is behind bars this week with the help of two brave Rockaway Park residents who chased him down the street with his pockets stuffed with stolen jewelry until the police arrived to arrest him.
The defendant, William O’Connor, 34 of Brooklyn, broke into a house near Newport Avenue and Beach 118 Street last Tuesday at around 2 p.m., while the residents were still home, by prying open a window with a broken mop handle.
He allegedly ransacked the house and then used the front door to escape from the scene. A nearby neighbor and the resident of the home spotted O’Connor leaving the house when they gave chase, tackled him to the ground and waited for police to arrive. Police recovered two necklaces, two pairs of earrings, a pendant and bracelet that began pouring out of his hooded sweatshirt pocket as he ran up the street. Police also recovered a hammer and screwdriver near the window he pried open.
O’Connor was charged with second degree burglary, possession of burglar tools, criminal mischief and criminal possession of stolen property. He was held on $100,000 bail and is due back in court on March 9.
