LWA Creates New Center For The Creative Arts

Responding to strong demand from the local community, the Lawrence Woodmere Academy Summer Day Program is thrilled to announce the addition for summer 2012 of its new Center for the Creative Arts (CCA) alongside its long-standing, successful program.

The full-immersion program, for children entering second grade and up who are interested in dramatic or visual arts, allows each child to choose one “major,” either drama or visual art.

They also choose two “minors,” including options such as Camp Band, dance, instructional swim, glee club, ceramics and sculpture, cartooning and animation, textile art and private or semi-private instrumental and voice lessons. CCA will utilize LWA’s five fully air-conditioned art studios and beautiful theater and arts center. The program will culminate in dramatic productions as well as art shows.

The children in CCA will still enjoy daily recreational swim, hot lunch and optional clubs (including athletics or a traditional drama presentation) that all children at LWASD can choose.

The group will attend two Broadway shows, go on multiple museum visits, take a backstage tour and go on other trips.

Local artisans and musicians will also share their expertise with CCA children both on and off campus.

LWASD’s partner in dramatic arts is Kevin and Phyllis Harrington’s Plaza Theatrical Performing Arts Academy of Lynbrook. The director of the CCA drama effort, Kevin Harrington, has been producing and directing theatrical productions throughout the tri-state area since 1983.

The New York Times has called his Plaza Theatrical “Long Island’s Most Prolific Theatre Company.” LWASD also welcomes Dance Express of Woodmere and its top quality dance teachers as part of the entire Summer Day dance program as well as CCA.

LWASD Director Barbra Feldman said, “This program is the first of its kind on the South Shore. Some children simply prefer to focus their summer fun on the arts. We will provide children in CCA the chance to participate in everything our 35-year-old program has to offer, including athletics, or limit themselves to our dramatic and visual arts offerings.

Our partnership with Plaza and Dance Express ensures that the children will experience a truly professional level of training in drama and dance. Our team of professional artists will amaze children focused on visual arts.

It is amazing to me how many children have already signed up for our new program before we have even promoted it!”

Kevin Harrington of Plaza Theatrical said, “We have spent a tremendous amount of time with Barbra and her team planning an amazing summer for the children at LWASD.

We are bringing our top directors, choreographers, musical directors, stage managers and set designers to make sure this is a truly special experience for all the children involved.”
