Bernard P. Donovan
Bernard (Barney) P. Donovan, 84, a former Rockaway resident, died December 20.
Donovan was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 24, 1927. He was an attorney who lived on Beach 135 Street for many years as well as Rockville Centre, New York. He later moved to Orange Beach, Alabama. He graduated from Brooklyn Academy and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He later joined the law firm of William Donovan. He also worked several years with New York Life, Real Estate Division and Cushman Wakefield. He then spent the rest of his career at J.C. Penny Reality Corporation in New York. After a meeting with Ken Langone, he met with Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus and closed the real estate transaction for the first six Home Depot stores.
Donovan was preceded in death by his parents, James E. and Meta Donovan nee Heissenbuttell and brother, James E. Donovan Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Donovan; son, Bernard “Barry” Donovan Jr.; daughter, Margaret M. Struble and son-in-law, Glenn C. Struble; son, Damian P. Donovan and daughter-inlaw, Jenny D. Cox; sister, Joan E. Scolarici; brother, Brian P. Donovan; grandchildren, Kathleen, Christine, Alison, Daniel, Quinn, Brian, Derek, and James; and two great-grandchildren, Lucy and June.
A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, Gulf Shores, Alabama.
