How Many Times Will We Cry

Dear Editor,

It was the sixth Saturday of the New Year; which doesn’t seem so new anymore; that we lost Whitney Houston. We had just wiped our tears ten days prior for the man that gave us Soul Train, Don Cornelius, not to mention our bleeding hearts three years ago for Michael Jackson.

So many of us get lost, despondent, and find ourselves on a road that leads to disaster. The constant struggles and challenges of Whitney Houston’s life were before us. We were helpless, but continued to pray for her and others who touched our lives with their music. What was her message? Why did she leave us so soon? As this is Black History month we will never forget our tears of the past of the culture that made us brave enough to prepare and confident enough to perform.

Whitney Houston inspired many young artists and will be remembered for her soprano voice and model looks. She could have been our lawyer, our teacher, our doctor; but she chose music. Music, that gave our ancestors comfort and peace in their daily trials and tribulations. I cannot think of more…….; but we will always love you, Whitney; and continue to ask ‘how many times will we cry?
