Rockaway St. Patrick’s Parade Scheduled For 3/3

By Nicholas Briano

The Queens County 37th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will step off at 1 p.m. from Beach 129 Street and Newport Avenue on Saturday, March 3.

The parade, which is always one of the premier events in the Rockaways, brings hundreds of local and citywide marchers to the peninsula for a fun afternoon that celebrates Irish heritage as thousands of spectators line the streets.

The route will once again end at Beach 102 Street with the reviewing stand located at Beach 105 Street. The parade route was shortened by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in time for last year’s parade. Bloomberg cited rising costs in police overtime as his reasoning to order all New York City parades shortened by at least 25 percent.

The parade’s tradition includes a morning mass at St. Francis de Sales Church on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 129 Street before the parade begins from Beach 129 Street and Newport Avenue. The parade continues east on Newport Avenue to Beach 116 Street, where it will turn south to Rockaway Beach Boulevard and then east again to Beach 102 Street.

Rockaway Beach Boulevard will be closed to traffic and parking. Local bus routes will be re-directed to Beach Channel Drive.
