Cancer affects almost 9 million people in the U.S. In the next year, more than 1.2 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer and a projected 555,500 will die because of it. Those are the projections from the American Cancer Society. On March 6, the ACS will host the 12th Annual Rockaway Relay for Life, an overnight event that raises money to defeat the disease.

“At last year’s relay we had 15 teams and 100 participants that came out to Relay in the rain,” said Taliah Duchatelier, the manager of Special Events for the Queens region of the ACS. “Despite the weather we were able to raise a little over $30,000.”

This year an informational kickoff will be held at the Thai Rock Restaurant, 375 Beach 92 Street in Rockaway Beach, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be an opportunity to sign up as a team captain or to be part of the event’s planning committee. Relay for Life raises awareness of cancer in the community and raises money to support the programs and services of the ACS. This year’s Relay will be held at Riis Park on June 23 and June 24. Anyone with questions or who would like to attend the kickoff should call Duchatelier at 718-261-1092 ext. 5511 or email taliah.duchatelier @cancer.org.
