Open Letter From Bob Turner

The following letter was sent to Linda Canzanelli, Superintendent, Gateway National Recreational Area.

I am writing to commend you for your recent efforts to complete a new cooperative five year agreement with the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), to expand programs offered within the Gateway National Recreational Area at Fort Tilden. This agreement represents your continued efforts toward building closer relationships between community organizations and the National Park Service. As such, it is a major step towards ensuring that our public spaces remain accessible to local community groups.

I appreciate your efforts to encourage and support positive uses of Gateway, and the cooperative relationship our offices have established since the beginning of my term. Your emphasis on building private-public partnerships to most effectively utilize public land is commendable, and the responsible, business-like approach you bring to Gateway will continue to benefit our community.

I believe that long term access to Fort Tilden by groups like the RAA, as well as the Rockaway Little League and the Rockaway Theater Company, which also utilize this area, results in positive outcomes for all involved. Their responsible stewardship ensures that Gateway is well cared for, and the investments they make enhance this public space for visitors and residents alike.

I am confident that through your leadership, we can continue to keep the Gateway National Recreational Area open to the community, and ensure that our public spaces are utilized to their fullest potential. I look forward to continuing to work with you to address the needs of the community within the bounds of the Park’s mission.
