PHC Board Elects New President And VP

Peninsula Hospital Center’s Medical Board recently elected Howard L. Sussman, M.D., Director, Department of Surgery Interim Program Director of the Surgical Residency Program, and Peter A. Guiney, D.O., Director, Medical Education and Director, Family Practice Residency Program, as its president and vice president, respectively.

Howard L. Sussman, M.D., has been an active member of the medical staff and an attending surgeon at Peninsula Hospital Center since 2005 when he opened a practice on the fourth floor of the Hospital Center. He was appointed Peninsula Hospital Center’s Acting Director, Department of Surgery in 2006 and its Director in 2007. Dr. Sussman is a well-respected and experienced Board Certified surgeon who has a special interest in breast surgery. Before coming to Peninsula Hospital Center, Sussman served as Associate Director of Surgery and later as Chief Medical Officer at Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Sussman also serves as the Interim Program Director of the Hospital Center’s Surgical Residency Program.

Peter A. Guiney, D.O., has been an active member of the Hospital Center’s medical staff since 1991. Dr. Guiney first arrived at Peninsula Hospital Center in 1986 as a medical student and successfully completed his internship and residency in Family Practice. After completing his residency, he worked as an Attending Physician in the Hospital Center’s Emergency Department becoming the Director of Family Practice Residency Program in 1999 and the Director of Medical Education in 2007. Dr. Guiney has been recognized with a fellowship award by the American College of Osteopathic Family Practitioners and is credited with having developed the first academic hospitalist fellowship program of its kind in the nation at Peninsula Hospital Center.

“We are extremely pleased to have two such accomplished physicians lead our Medical Board,” said Todd Miller, CEO of Peninsula Hospital Center. “Not only are they fine physicians, but they are committed to the Hospital Center and are eager to see it grow and develop to better serve the community.” Peter A. Galvin, M.D., the Hospital Center’s Chief Medical officer, echoes those sentiments. “I have known both Dr. Sussman and Dr. Guiney for years and I know I speak for the other members of the Board when I say they are warmly welcomed into their new leadership roles.”

Martin Grossman, M.D., the immediate past president of the Hospital’s Medical Board, continues to serve as the Medical Director, Hospice Care and the Director of Palliative and Hospice Care at the Hospital Center.
