Beach Channel Drive Closed Off Due To Gas Leak

Police barricade tape at Beach 51 Street on Beach Channel Drive blocks off traffic Monday as emergency vehicles, including Hazmat Units, stand ready after workers for a contractor inadvertently damaged a 2-inch gas main near the corner of Beach 49 Street that once provided service to the Dunkin’ Donuts directly across the street. Uniformed personnel from the FDNY and NYPD blocked off the area for two blocks in each direction from Beach 47 to Beach 51 Streets. Shortly before 1 p.m. workers for National Grid turned off the gas to the area as members of the FDNY stood by as a precautionary measure. According to sources at the scene, workers for the contractor did not realize it was a gas main because it was not labeled as such. No evacuations were ordered of any homes, PS 105, Peninsula Hospital or the Peninsula Rehabilitation Center nursing home. National Grid did not reply to requests for comment.
