H.S. Report: Saylor Jr. Returns

By Elio Velez

Far Rockaway senior guard Warren Saylor Jr. was close to not suiting up for his senior season.

Saylor Jr. sat on the bench due to ineligibility for the first 8 games of the PSAL campaign for the Seawolves. But the team’s leading scorer as a junior wasn’t about to let his final high school season go up in smoke.

Saylor Jr. enjoyed his final regular season home game on Wednesday afternoon, scoring a team high 15 points to lead Far Rockaway Educational Campus to an easy 71-43 win over Grover Cleveland.

“I had trouble in school and I realized what happen off the court affects on the court,” Saylor Jr. said. “It taught me discipline and act with character and be civilized at all times. All life lessons are taught the hard way whether you have something taken away you love the most and realize what you are doing is irrelevant. It happens.”

Malik Stewart added 12 points and 11 rebounds while Tyrelle Gordon added 10 as Far Rockaway ended the PSAL Queens ‘A’ East campaign with an 8-6 record. Far Rockaway also clinched a berth into the playoffs which start on February 15.

Saylor Jr. has high expectations for his team as the playoffs approaches. The Seawolves believe they are still one of the best teams in the division despite their fourth place finish and are going to make some noise. “This is my last year and we to go out as one unit and finish what we started,” Saylor Jr. said.

Scholars Win Showcase Game

Scholars’ Academy earned another win the PSAL ‘B’ Girls Showcase last Saturday afternoon with a 69-41 victory over Bushwick in a game held at the High School of Construction in Ozone Park. Jessica Glaz scored a game high 22 points, and Taylor Gallagher added 20 points to lead the Seawolves. Kayla Nolan also scored 11 for the Scholars’ Academy.

In their last regular season home game on Tuesday afternoon, freshman Serena Yannello had 16 points to lead Scholars’ to a 77-39 victory over Pathways Prep.

Scholars’ (17-2, 11-1 PSAL ‘B’ Queens East) have two games remaining in the regular season with games against Springfield Gardens and Robert F. Kennedy on Tuesday. Dolphins Gain Road Win

A pivotal 23-0 second quarter run by Beach Channel/Channel View proved to be the difference in a 63-49 victory at Martin Van Buren last Tuesday afternoon.

Ismail Abdullah led Beach Channel (8-5) with 20 points while Christopher John added 12 points and Semaj Smith scored 10. The Dolphins had one PSAL AA regular season game left at presstime at Flushing High School.

Beach Channel is expected to qualify for the PSAL borough playoffs, which start on Tuesday, February 7. The Dolphins should earn a fourth seed in the 8-team tournament and are expected to host Queens A West champions Long Island City.
