PS114 Students Share Their Writing

Student Memoirs

Dear Readers,

You are about to read some extraordinary memoirs written by the fifthgrade students of PS 114. The passion is contagious: these kids sit like the fans at a football game, and cheer with me about the joy of writing.

Imitation (modeling) is an integral part of the teaching here. The masters of any sport or skill are the ultimate teachers. Like the “plays” in any sport, writing skills can be assimilated with the right techniques. The elements of literary style are the tools these young writers have learned to use, effectively.

The lessons are simple, but they are also practiced in a way that’s fun for fifth-grade students.

And the results are obviously successful. These kids succeed, because they are players. They succeed on the court, on the field, on the stage and in the classroom. And I am proud to be their writing coach.
