Could Over The Bridge … ?

Dear Editor,

As we celebrate Governor Cuomo’s proposal to eliminate the Cross Bay Bridge toll for Rockaway and Broad Channel residents, we must ask some questions.

The Governor’s proposal appears as a one year appropriation to reimburse the MTA for the rebate. Budget items put in one year can be removed in future years. We need legislation forbidding the MTA or any state agency from imposing discriminatory tolls on any community.

Andrew Cuomo is a masterful politician. For every reward he gives, there is a cost. Will our community get the state support we need to keep our hospitals open and performing at a level at which residents will use them as a first choice? Will our schools provide the education and atmosphere to permit our children to move ahead?

Will we enable our public service workers to live in dignity during their working and retired years? Will the state support the reopening of the Rockaway Beach line of the LIRR so local commuters and visitors to the casino and convention center at Aqueduct get to midtown Manhattan in one half an hour?

The 2012-13 Executive Budget and Reform Plan is on the Internet. Those who are concerned must become familiar with it and, with the help of their organizations and local officials, make sure that all of our needs are met.
