American Flag Distress In West End

The American flag always flies proudly over government buildings – except at some Rockaway venues, where the flag flies in real distress. You would expect that the firehouse would have a crisply flying flag during daylight hours, but the flag on the Beach 95 Street firehouse, adjacent to the 100 Precinct, is tangled and frayed. This flag, ripped and hanging upside down, sits at the Rockaway Beach branch post office. Flying a flag upside down traditionally means danger or distress, but even though the office was once slated for closing, it will remain open and it is the flag that is in distress, not the office. Local politicians contacted by The Wave said that they would provide new flags for the government facilities as soon as possible.
