Turner: Options Must Be On Table With Iran
Congressman Bob Turner (NY-09) was joined by Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) during his press conference today at the Avenue N Jewish Center in Brooklyn where he spoke about the importance of keeping all options on the table when dealing with Iran.
Congressman Turner said that he returned from his trip to Israel on Sunday with a much better understanding of the volatility in the region and how much of a threat a nuclear Iran poses to the United States and Israel.
“During my trip I got a vivid reminder of just how dangerous it is for the people of Israel right now. Iran’s past involvement with attacks against the United States and our allies, along with their recent public threats, prove them to be a real danger to our safety and security. The thought of Iran developing the means to build just one bomb, much less the ability to manufacture them at will, is not something we can allow to happen.”
Turner drove home the point in order to protect Americans and Israelis alike, President Obama should consider any and every possible choice that will keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
“President Obama cannot allow there to be any doubt about our support for Israel or his resolve to protect the American people.
Not only should the President leave every option on the table, but he should also use the powers which Congress has given him to fully implement sanctions against the Central Bank of Iran and also work with the Senate to pass the Iran Threat Reduction Act.”
Assemblyman Hikind said, “I support sanctions against Iran as a means of stopping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
In fact, I recently voted in support of the Iran Divestment Act of 2012, which prohibits state and local governments from conducting business with companies that invest in Iran’s energy industry.
But it has come to the point where we can no longer rule out the very real possibility of taking military action against Iran. Under no circumstances should the United States sit idly by while Iran continues to develop nuclear weapons which threaten our very existence and that of our allies.”
Throughout the press conference, Turner stressed the urgency in dealing with Iran and how dangerous a nuclear bomb in the hands of Iranian leadership would be.
“We have known that Iran has been trying to obtain nuclear capabilities for years. However, I fear that we are fast approaching the point that it will be too late to stop Iran’s ambitions.
Allowing Iran to develop a nuclear weapon is a matter of national security for the United States and threatens the very existence of Israel. President Obama must consider all possibilities and cannot waste anymore time in dealing with this threat.”
