Celebrating Cancer Survivors
The Samaritan Hands Outreach Center at St. John Baptist Church (SJBC) in Arverne, celebrated six cancer survivors at an event on December 10, including Yvonne Hall, Janelle Mason-Johnson, Jaunice Pryce, Charisse Reid, Thomas Dennard and Fred Jones. All recipients were introduced by loved ones and given awards that inscribed words of continuous strength which they have all displayed in their lifestyles. Present at the event was Michele Lloyd-Bey, District 27 Superintendent and Mr. Melchiorre, representative of District 27 and former principal of PS 225, as well as many local DOE employees, community leaders, the Arverne American Cancer Association committee members, church members, family and friends. Assemblywoman Michele Titus presented Deacon Stillwell, Director of the SJBC Samaritan Hands Outreach Health Ministry, with a proclamation for the outstanding work of this ministry, done throughout the year.
The ministry of the St. John Baptist Church gives those facing a cancer diagnosis the hope and ability to seek solutions as they cope with the unknown. This health ministry has provided workshops on all cancer diagnoses including colonoscopy, pancreatic cancer, cervical and breast cancer. In addition, at most workshops there have been medical and clinical staff available from the Addabbo Family Health Center to help increase awareness of community treatment.
