Goldfeder:Address Decaying Bulkhead
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder sent a letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg requesting that immediate attention be given to a deteriorated bulkhead (Bay Wall), located at Beach Channel Drive between Beach 108 Street and Rockaway Freeway in Rockaway Beach.
“This particular section of the Rockaway Bay Wall needs immediate attention and repair,” Goldfeder said. “We cannot take chances on the safety and protection of the Rockaway community.”
Close to five years ago, the city invested millions of dollars to repair the same section of the wall that is now rusted and rotting away. While the reason for the decay is unknown, the current potential for disaster is alarming, Goldfeder noted in his letter. At high tide the water reaches Beach Channel Drive, one of Rockaway’s busiest roads and one of its only east/west corridors.
Goldfeder also noted the need for a full and comprehensive review of the entire Rockaway Bay Wall.
“The Rockaway’s have been neglected for too long,” Goldfeder said. “The Rockaway Bay Wall is only getting worse and the piecemeal approach is not the answer, we need a comprehensive study and plan to keep our neighborhood and families safe.”
The letter concluded by encouraging Mayor Bloomberg to “direct the appropriate agency and personnel to investigate this troubling and dangerous situation.”
