SFDS Christmas Tournament Begins

The 27th annual St. Francis de Sales Christmas Tournament reached its first break in play after six days of exciting games. In the Subnovice division, SFDS Blue has advanced to the Winner’s bracket final, against St. Adalbert, by beating St. Patrick. SFDS Gold has been eliminated after a pair of close losses to Blessed Trinity and St. Patrick, who both remain alive. The Pee Wee division featured an earlier than usual game between the two St. Francis teams.

First round losses by the Gold to St. Patrick and the Blue to St. Joseph led to the elimination bracket matchup. Gold ran out to an early 7-0 lead and also held a late 25-20 edge but the resilient Blue mounted multiple comebacks and prevailed at the end, 27-25. They followed with another thrilling win over Our Lady of the Angelus, which eliminated Blessed Trinity, and St. Margaret will be next on Monday at 7:00. St. Patrick and St. Joseph are in the Winner’s bracket final Tuesday at 6:00. The Novice Winner’s bracket final is Tuesday at 7:00 with St. Francis taking on Our Lady of the Angelus. SFDS advanced with wins over St. Camillus-Virgilius and St. Margaret. St. Rose lost its first game against St. Margaret but will get a second crack at them after beating St. Camillus-Virgilius and St. Agnes in the elimination bracket.

St. Francis Bantams have been impressive beating St. Agnes and Tri- Parish. Epiphany is next in the Winner’s bracket final, Monday at 8:00. St. Rose lost to Epiphany and plays St. Agnes next. St. Patrick and St. Andrew play the Rookie Winner’s bracket final. St. Francis lost their first game to Tri- Parish and will face them again in the elimination bracket after beating St. Rose. Blessed Trinity was also eliminated by Tri-Parish. Intermediate division rivals St. Francis and St. Rose will play the Winner’s bracket final on Monday at 9:00. St. Francis has wins over St. Margaret and St. Adalbert. St. Rose beat Blessed Trinity, who now face St. Margaret.

There are no games this weekend for Christmas and Christmas Eve. After games this Friday night, the Tournament goes into its final stretch beginning Monday night. Elimination bracket finals are Tuesday for the Rookie and Intermediate divisions and Wednesday for the Subnovice, Pee Wee, Novice, and Bantam. The Championship schedule on Thursday begins with the Subnovice at 6:00, followed by the Pee Wee at 7:15 and Novice at 9:00. The Special Awards will follow the Pee Wee Championship. The Championship schedule on Friday begins with the Bantam at 6:00, followed by the Rookie at 7:15 and Inter-mediate at 9:00. The Special Awards will follow the Rookie Championship.
