McClancy Memorial HS Nips Xavier HS 43 - 41
On Monday, December 19 the Monsignor McClancy boys varsity basketball team defeated Xavier High School 43-41 at Xavier. McClancy is coached by Don Kent, a summer resident of Breezy Point.
McClancy led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter but was outscored 13-2 in the second quarter to fall behind 22-15 at halftime. The Crusaders came back to outscore Xavier 17-9 in the third quarter to go up 32-32. Brian Berrius, a 6-foot senior guard from McClancy, made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the quarter.
The fourth quarter was close all the way with McClancy up 38-33 only to have Xavier sparked by 6’3” junior forward Matt Crockett, who got hot as Xavier took the lead 41-38 with 1:21 left. The Crusaders of McClancy then outscored Xavier 5-0 to take the lead 43-41. Xavier had the ball with 10 seconds and both shots fell short. Senior forward Levon James had put in a lay-up with 40 seconds left to put McClancy up by two. Austin John Huggins and Chris Ramos scored 13 points each for Mc- Clancy and Brain Berrios added 11 points. Matt Crockett of Xavier, an ACC division candidate, led all scorers with 20 points. Matt’s brother Kevin, only a sophomore, had 5 points.
Coach Kent was pleased with his team winning on the road, especially since the Crusaders have lost four close games by a combined total of 17 points. McClancy is now 5-5 for the season while Xavier is 5-2.
