The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

As the year closes, it is good to do an assessment of what no longer works for you. Is it time to throw out things that are no longer of use or fun? Possibly it is time to let go of relationships that no longer work. We may be keeping certain people in our lives based on history and sentimental connections with the past, but in the present we can actually feel resentment towards these people. It may be time to part and give yourself the room and space to create better relationships for yourself.

We also may have outmoded thoughts that no longer feel comfortable. The idea of the way a holiday ought to be may be from a childhood memory that doesn’t fit present conditions. We will feel disappointed if we don’t release these outmoded fantasies. It is better to see what is current in life and create a good idea in the present.

When you can let go of what no longer works, a sense of freedom will flood in. If you get rid of what can now be called useless stuff, you will enjoy having space. If the relationships can be released, you will have more time to yourself to fill it with activities that you enjoy or new relationships that are more suitable to who you are now. If it is beliefs, you will find that you can truly enjoy what life has given you in the present. You can have new ideas of what fun can be or how to do things. We can control many things in our own space. It is important to realize what we can control in our own lives. We can consciously keep or let go of our own perception of our world to bring about our own happiness.
