Rockaway Teen Challenge Exhibition League
Rockaway Teen Challenge 2012 (RTC) is provoking the competitive nature of our youth to help stimulate a healthier lifestyle and more positive behavior.
A partnership with NYC Housing Authority and NYC Parks is bringing a 6- week basketball exhibition tournament, which began Thursday, November 10 at Hammels Center. Games are being played by youth aged 16 and under from across the peninsula on Tuesday and Thursday at Hammel and on Wednesday at the Sorrentino Center from 6:30- 8:30 p.m.
All are invited to championship games at Hammel on Thursday, December 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Teams from Action Center, coached by Daryl Devore; St. Rose of Lima, coached by Mark Butigian; Hammel, coached by Vincent Braxton and Rob Volkens; Beach 41 Houses, coached by Thomas and Malik; St. Francis, coached by Brian; and Sorrentino, coached by Team Deuce, Isaac Parsee; Ocean Village, coached by Bryant and Kendu.
A vital component of the Teen Challenge initiative is the opportunity to bring behavior modifying messages to these youth. On Friday, December 9, Howard Robertson, retired Warden for Riker’s Island Correctional Facility, conducted a “real talk” presentation, motivating youth away from gangs and violence.
Other significant partners to this exhibition tournament include NYC Commission on Human Rights and the 101 Police Precinct. A local business, V&C Transportation, is an official RTC sponsor.
Little Caesar’s, newly located on Beach Channel Drive, co-sponsored pizza for the workshop.
Representatives from the Mayor’s and Senator Malcolm Smith’s offices were in attendance.
RTC is currently recruiting coach mentors and planning other sport exhibitions. To volunteer or register your child for Rockaway Teen Challenge 2012 games, contact Denean Ferguson at 646-552-8453.
