Holiday Tournament Begins At St. Francis De Sales

The 27th Annual St. Francis de Sales Christmas Tournament tipped off on Wednesday night with four games and again on Thursday with four more. Thirty-five teams from 14 parishes in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island will compete for the titles in six divisions.

The tournament is a highlight of the CYO calendar and a cherished Rockaway tradition. Tournament directors Marty and Keith Andresen are looking forward to another exciting edition of the tournament.

Play continues Friday night with four games beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the St. Francis de Sales Novice taking on St. Camillus-Virgilius. The SFDS Bantams face St. Agnes from Long Island at 8:00 p.m. and the Intermediates hope to play the 9:00 p.m. game against St. Adalbert of Elmhust, assuming they win their opener on Wednesday night against St. Margaret of Middle Village.

The Rookies were quickly into action with a Wednesday opener against Tri- Parish from Long Beach and hopefully a second round encounter on Thursday against St. Patrick of Bay Ridge. The Pee Wee Blue hopes to play a second round game at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday after facing St. Joseph, Long Island City on Wednesday.

The Pee Wee Gold will be in action Saturday at 4:45 p.m. in their first game against either St. Patrick or Our Lady of the Angelus, Rego Park. The Subnovice Blue team opens Saturday’s schedule at 10:00 against St. Patrick. The Subnovice Gold played the opening game of this year’s Christmas Tournament at 6:00 on Wednesday against Blessed Trinity with the winner playing St. Adalbert on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule includes nine games beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday’s slate has eight beginning at noon and then three on Monday night beginning at 6:00.

The tournament takes a two day break, resumes on December 22-23 and then finishes up from December 26-30. Championship games will be spread over two nights, December 29-30, as will the awards presentation.

The kitchen will be serving a full menu of refreshments throughout the tournament. There will be multiple performances by the St. Francis Cheerleaders, 50/50 raffles, and lots of Christmas music to entertain you between games.

Come out to the games this weekend to check out the action and to pick up a program to guide you through the next two weeks. See you at St. Francis de Sales gym.
