Simon says. . .

From the Desk of Lew M. Simon, Democratic District Leader, 23rd A.D. Part B

Lew M. Simon Lew M. Simon As we enter the busy month of December, I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Happy Kwanzaa. During the Thanksgiving holiday we had a festive time at the Rockaway Point Association Senior Thanksgiving dinner. It’s always great to be up in Rockaway Point with my family.

‘Tis the season to get rid of the toll on the Cross Bay Bridge once and for all. New Executive Director Joe Lhota needs to hear from us loud and clear to eliminate the toll on the CBB for the residents of Rockaway, Broad Channel and Breezy Point. Expect to hear shortly from us concerning a rally to occupy the Cross Bay Bridge and take back our right of free passage.

I’d like to give a million thank yous to Marie of Breezy Dog for her donation of a beautiful Christmas tree for the residents of Roxbury to be placed outside St. Genevieve’s Church for the festivities. We urge everyone to visit Marie and buy your trees and wreathes. Marie is located in the entrance to the Waldbaum’s Shopping Center. During Hurricane Irene, Marie took her Breezy Dog truck back to her spot at Fort Tilden at 5 p.m. and fed everyone free hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, ice cream, etc. Maria is a true hero. We should remember to support her.

Are you in need of a hospital bed? We have one available free. Please call me at 718-945-1216.

We attended the annual Christmas tree lighting on Beach 116 Street. Kudos and gratitude to Brown’s Hardware for donating the tree, Belle Harbor Steak House for refreshments, 100 Precinct Community Council for the candy canes and to the Chamber of Commerce; and special thanks to Capt. Olexa and the officers of the 100 Precinct who brought Santa directly from the North Pole. Bravo to the children of the Rockaway Theatre Company under the direction of Jodi Timpone.

A beautiful Christmas tree was lighted at the Breezy Point Cooperative. We were treated to an outstanding concert by the children of the Red Wagon Tiny Tots.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. James Cassidy on the birth of their son James Francis Jr. born on Friday, December 2 and weighing in at 6 pounds. The proud grandparents are Barney and Terri Cassidy and Vincent and JeanineBonnano. Congratulations and mazel tov on the baby’s birth.

On the Friday evening after the Christmas tree lightings we went to our favorite Christmas party hosted by the wonderful publisher of The Wave. Susan Locke is a great hostess. We enjoyed the delicious buffet and dessert at Bungalow Bar where the food is always delicious and the ambiance is wonderful.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Michael Miley, a Rockaway legend, great friend and an outstanding individual who was born in, raised in and loved Rockaway. He expected to move back shortly to our community. Unfortunately he suddenly passed away. He had promised that he was going to raise hell and get rid of the tolls. God must have needed a very special angel in heaven.

We urge all shareholders in Dayton Towers east and west to cast your vote for Marcia Albino who is # 1 on your ballot. I have known Marcia, whom we call Micky, for the last 24 years. She is extremely dedicated to the Rockaway and Broad Channel communities. Micky had served as treasurer of my 2009 City Council race and spent countless hours at the hearings, rallies and events to end the Cross Bay Bridge toll. She was super active in the Police Department‘ s 10-13 club where they help those who have been hurt on the job. She also served for many years as executive director of Deborah, which is a hospital organization that helps people in need of special care and surgery. Marcia will be there to assist shareholders of Dayton Towers as well as a good voice.
