SFDS Pee Wee Blue Continues CYO Winning Streak
The SFDS Boys Pee Wee Blue notched its fourth win of the CYO basketball season in four tries with a 15-8 victory over Sacred Heart on their home court.
St. Francis started slow offensively, only scoring six first half points with baskets by Ian Byrne and Joe Tammaro. While the offense sputtered, the defense was smothering, causing turnover after turnover, using the half court press.
Christian Rodriguez-Zirino, Mike DeMarco and Christian Agoglia led the charge on defense.
The second half started with a more balanced offensive attack and the defense kept up its frenetic pace. Danny Endall got the hot hand in the fourth quarter, putting the game safely out of reach from Sacred Heart. Cooper Nagel, fresh off an early season Utah ski trip continued to play a balanced game.
Big kudos to James Agoglia, Joe Featherston, Kyle Duffy and Terence Marten for controlling both the offensive and defensive boards. Next up for St. Francis Blue is Blessed Trinity this Sunday at 3 p.m. on their court.
The Bantam Boys edged St. Helens 30-28 in a game that saw the lead change a dozen times. John Moran was unconscious from long range, hitting three beyond the arc and scoring 13 points. Matty Ostrander was hot in the second quarter scoring six. Timmy Connolly held down the boards.
The real drama of the game occurred in the waning moments. TJ Powderly knotted the score, hitting a three, with 12 seconds on the clock and Aidan Donahue followed a St. Helen’s miss with a running one-hander at the buzzer.
The Girls Pee Wee H team traveled to St. Robert on Sunday, and in a tight defensive struggle held on for a one point victory. Shannon Neiswenter’s jumper late in the third quarter was the deciding basket as no one was able to score in the fourth quarter.
The strong offensive line was led by Caitlin Mullin and Kate Hughes. The incredible, relentless defensive wall – Kaysea Jenkusky, Kathleen Walker, Jillian McCabe, Maggie Murphy and Margaret Murray – kept St. Roberts at bay.
Great game girls!
The Novice Girls defeated St. Margaret at home on Saturday, 19-7. The girls were led offensively by Ryan Carlton and Alex Dadario, who each scored 6 points. Hannah Harkins and Jillian Howard controlled the defense with numerous blocks and rebounds. Kelsey Flynn led as usual with hustle all over the court.
