Blessed Trinity Sixth Grade Girls Win Diocesan Championship
Saturday, November 12 was a day to remember for Blessed Trinity Sixth Grade Girls. Meeting SFDS in the championship was expected, but winning the game in a nail biting second round shootout was not. Molly Sautner sent the final kick through the goal with precision winning the championship game and ending BT’s longstanding second place position. Players, parents and fans stood silent for a moment as they absorbed this realization and then burst into celebration.
BT implemented a defensive strategy that shut down SFDS’ ability to score. Kate McDonough refused to allow a single goal get by her, despite the many attempts by SFDS. Jackie Wilkins, Molly Sautner, Jessica Geis and Tara Lennon continually defended the goal and back half while driving the ball up and out into offensive territory. LizzyYoung, Elizabeth Nies and Kate Danaher held down the midfield, with each player hunting down the ball and keeping it in play. Lauren Regan and Emma Gross alternated with Caroline Dolan, Marie Baron and Nadia Bacchus to serve their team with undaunting determination, covering the ball and interrupting SFDS’ attempts to take long shots and pass.
Rhiannon Gormley, Maeve Regan and Grace Kane took up dual positions. They played on the backfield to create an Iron Grid defense and then charged up the field to support the offense and attempt shots on goal.
Erin Wallace and Katie Billows worked the frontline against SFDS’ tough defense, weaving in and out of defensive players, pushing forward and passing.
The game was evenly matched and the players on both teams gave it their all. It was truly amazing to witness the support both teams had from their family and friends who came to the game to cheer them on. The team also wanted to thank and acknowledge Congressman Bob Turner for attending the game and visibly showing his support for events on the peninsula.
