Inability To Think Straight

Dear Editor:

As the OWS demonstrators protest income inequality and other peoples’ wealth, they also demonstrate their own inability to think straight. The American economy is not a zero sum game. For one person to gain, it is not necessary for another to lose. We have a dynamic economy in which wealth is created and shared across the entire range of income. Goods and services that only thirty years ago were available to only the wealthy are now available to the so called poor. You may complain about not eating prime steaks every night, but when you are overweight and well clothed, your complaints have a taint of envy.

There is a national controversy about the best way to create jobs, and by creating jobs bring the country back to prosperity. This is magical thinking. Jobs do not create prosperity. Prosperity creates jobs. Prosperity has been achieved previously through cheap energy, available labor, reasonable governmental regulation and the willingness of entrepreneurs to engage in rational risk. At the present time our various levels of government, the instruments which claim to have the solution for our economic problems are at the root of our problem. The lack of cheap energy, in a nation bursting with untapped oil and natural gas reserves is a scandal.

The inability of companies to build facilities which would give all Americans access to cheap energy is a disaster. Forcing gasoline producers to use ethanol, further driving up the price of food to the world, is a crime. Bring back prosperity through common sense.
