The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

As 2011 draws to a close, we can meditate on how this year was for us. Did we suffer? Did we get what we wanted?

Were we able to maintain balance in spite of it all? Some people will come up with New Year’s resolutions. If you did at the beginning of the year, did you meet yours? Did your ideas change along the way? Life is so full of surprises. One of the main things we can do for ourselves is to be able to maintain a sense of peace and balance regardless of events around us. Other people’s opinions may come to us, there may be uncertainty about the future, but we can have the ability to separate our own energy and bring in peace and joy within our being. As people get frazzled around holiday preparation and expectations and then have to deal with the actual events and outcomes, we can have smooth sailing if we celebrate in a comfortable way with openness and love within. Going with the flow means allowing others to be themselves without being too critical and letting events unfold without too much of a script of how things should go. As we enter the new year, we want to enjoy ourselves as much as possible and do those things that are meaningful to us as individuals. We don’t have to get caught up in what the television tells us or what other people feel as long as we can check within and see what is important.

If we are true to ourselves, an inner peace will fill us with the peace and joy that life can offer.
