Blessed Trinity BoysWin Diocesan Soccer Championship
The Blessed Trinity CYO fifth grade soccer team defeated Saint Mel’s on Saturday afternoon at the windswept Fort Tilden field to win their third consecutive championship. The team finished the regular season undefeated as they also did for the last two years.
This year’s title win was as exciting as the previous years with rivaled competitive play. It all started with the first win two years ago with a double overtime and double shootout; Last year beating the opposition 1-0 in a nail biter; and this year with a 2-1 scrapper that seemed to last forever.
A three-peat in any league is a difficult one, and by no means did these boys just walk over the competition. Coach Durante and Coach Dugan know all too well about the boy’s commitment, giving beyond 100 percent on every play of every game. Despite the boys facing catabolic winds for the first half, their indomitable defense led by Kevin Kanning, Matt Devlin, Mike Ball and Goalie Brendan Gallagher each stifled St. Mel’s offense. The half ended with a 0-0 tie, optimistic that the brutal wind was now at their back.
The first strike into the net was executed by Jack McNamee who sped past the defenders after G-man Rodman outmaneuvered several opposition players then drove a pass to McNamee putting the Green machine up 1-0. Shane Gresser proved as vital with his constant attack for control of the ball all game long. The midfielder Jimmy Durante and Sweeper Matt Doscher also showed mettle, trapping and driving the ball steadily back into St Mel’s territory. Any chance of Mel’s driving down field was stopped by key plays from Sean Dugan and Danny Fleming.
Emmett Esposito finished off St. Mel’s with a finesse boot through the defenders legs putting BT up 2-0. Richie Hennessey in Goal for the second half, made mind reading saves and stopped all but one, preserving the victory for Blessed Trinity. Congratulations to the BT sixth grade boys, and Coaches Jim Durante, and Pat Dugan for another year of unbridled enthusiasm and determination.
