Mary J. Stathis
Mary J. Stathis, a longtime seasonal Rockaway resident, died November 13.
Stathis was born in Bronx, New York on February 16, 1922. She summered in Rockaway Beach for 70 years from Bronx, New York. Her parents immigrated from Rhodes and Kastoria, Greece. She graduated from New York University majoring in Education. In the early years of her marriage, military commitments moved her and her husband, Dr. John Stathis to Fort Benning, Georgia and Germany for tours of duty. She was an active member of Belle Harbor Garden Club, enjoyed playing bridge and golf, belonging to the Wheatly Hills Golf Club in East Williston, Long Island.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dr. John Stathis of Rockaway Park and Juno Beach, Florida; sons, Peter John Stathis (Carole) of Ridgefield, Connecticut; Louis John Stathis (Frances) of Belle Harbor; John Paul Stathis (Arlene) of Longmont, Colorado; nine grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home, Rockaway Beach. A funeral mass will was held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Jamaica, New York on Wednesday, November 16. Interment took place at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth, New York.
