Community Saved Peninsula Hospital

Dear Editor,

I have been a resident of the Rockaway’s for the past eleven years and prior to that, worked in the area at one of the nursing homes. I worked at Peninsula Hospital Center and Peninsula for Rehabilitation and Nursing for one year and left at the time of the impending closure, with regret, but due to financial obligations, I had to secure other employment.

I am writing this letter because, although I no longer work there, my heart and alliances are still there.

This is my neighborhood hospital and the place I take my family members.

Like many others, I was involved in and excited to see the rallies that took place to fight for the hospital to remain open. I hugged and cried with co-workers when we were unsure of the hospital’s future.

Prayer vigils were held and we all asked God to keep our hospital open. Well, our prayers were answered, and God has provided! However, God helps those that help them- selves!

Our community should now keep fighting to ensure that this threat of closure never reinvents itself.

We need to encourage our friends, neighbors and family members to utilize Peninsula Hospital Center’s many ser-vices. The Health Center, Dental and Eye Clinics, Breast imaging center, In-patient Long-term and Short term Hospice, TBI recovery unit and pediatric unit should all be supported! Get MRI’s and other screenings there also!

We must also understand that if the census of the hospital remains poor, staff cannot remain at full capacity. Layoffs must occur to eliminate the debt and financial obligations of the facility. If we promote and support this hospital, this could all be turned around.

Let us volunteer our time, donate books, magazines and even new pillows and blankets.

We give to our churches and other organizations, so we should also give where our paycheck and source of family income comes from!

Let us show community and group effort to keep PHC’s doors open!

Thanksgiving approaches! Let us give thanks for the answer to our prayers by giving and supporting Peninsula Hospital Center.

Our lives may de-pend on it!
