Historical Views of the Rockaways

Old Arverne And Edgemere Hotels In The Early 1900s
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

Shown today in Historical Views are photographs of two old hotels in the Arverne and Edgemere sections of the Rockaway Beach peninsula. They are typical of the hundreds of small hotels that saturated both sections, catering to summer visitors in the old days.

First is the Arverne Villa, which was on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Kneer Avenue (Beach 76 Street), and second is the Lawn Court Hotel, listed only as being in Edgemere. Both feature the classic type of small hotel construction typical of the time. Big, open porches were popular, but some had glassed-in portions. The Lawn Court has a glassed-in gazebo on one end.
