Open to children in grades K - 8, the program hours are 2:30-5:30 p.m., Monday- Thursday (the program will be open Thursdays through December 22). kidsmART is located in Building T-149 in Fort Tilden. Registration forms are available online at http://www.rockawayartistsalliance.org/ pdfs /KidsmartForms2011.pdf

Completed registration packets can be mailed to or dropped off at the RAA office located at 260 Beach 116 Street, Rockaway Park, NY, 11694. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Each year the celebrated program fills every inch of space in Building T- 149 with the creative outpourings of the participants. kidsmART is, however, so much more than an arts program. The kidsmART social code is based on the principles of kindness, imagination, dependability, sensitivity, motivation, acceptance, respect and tolerance. Staff is trained to implement the social code and have successfully created a program with zero tolerance for bullying and other antisocial behaviors. kidsmART provides a real alternative to boredom, TV and isolated afterschool hours.

A typical day at kidsmART features academic assistance; a snack; and a choice of hands-on workshops including painting, sculpture, environmental art, drama, dance, chorus, digital photography, arts and crafts, chess, portfolio development for fifth and eighth graders, and more. The workshops begin with discussion of the medium and subject; introduction to supplies and materials; examples of completed projects and demonstration of technique. A project can be confined to one session or it may span several sessions. kidsmART staff include Teen Assistants, Artistic Instructors, Assistant Directors, Facilitators and Directors. Teen Assistants are high school students or recent graduates. Artistic Instructors are college students or graduates possessing or pursuing degrees in Arts or Education, and/or have multiple years experience in the field. The Directors and Facilitators possess School Age Child Care Credentials, masters’ degrees in Fine Arts, Education, Special Education and Social Work. An appropriate number of staff are trained in CPR and Response to Emergency First Aid. All staff members are subject to thorough background checks at the state level. The program is registered with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and inspected by New York City Department of Health and New York City Department of Youth and Community Development.

The November general meeting is November 14, 7:30 p.m. in sTudio 7. An important meeting to attend, members will meet the nominees for the December election for board members. Each nominee will say a few words. Copies of letters of intent will be available for the membership at the meeting.

An electronic voting ballot will be emailed with nominees’ statements and a written ballot (with nominees’ statements) will be mailed to all members who do not have email. Email voting will have the heading “RAA Election Ballot.” Members who have trouble with their email and wish for a written ballot can call the RAA office to request that one be mailed to them. All written ballots must be mailed back to the RAA office.

Voting period will be from November 17 to midnight December 3 for emailed ballots; for mailed ballots December 2, received in RAA Office by Friday afternoon (postmarked Thursday). Membership will be informed of election results via RAA Newsletter before and at the annual meeting.

Second Annual Rockaway Artists Alliance on Jamaica Bay Art Exhibit takes place in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, November 12, 2011 to February 5, 2012. The closing reception for InkSplash, the printmaking exhibit curated by Christian Le Gars, was a great success. Well attended, the afternoon included a very informative discussion by participating artists revealing the intricacies of the techniques they used in their work. The ‘revelations’ made viewing the work that much more enjoyable. So informative was the afternoon, that even participants learned a thing or two from their fellow printmakers. And thanks to the Exhibitions Committee for bringing their special warmth and ‘good taste’ to the reception.

The Empty Bowls is an international hunger relief project. Bowls will be available for sale, every penny going to CHIPS. Live entertainment will include RAA singer/songwriters Dan Guarino and John Simonelli, the play “ckaway” by Mary Najeddine of the RAA Writers Group, starring Steve Schaikowitz and Dan Guarino, guitarist Noah Magnus, storytelling and original poetry readings.
